An Eye On The Future: A Vision Unlimited Initiative

Why Vision Matters

  • Vision is one of the most powerful yet underestimated determinants of human potential.
  • For a child, clear vision is foundational to learning—reading from the blackboard, writing accurately, sustaining attention, and participating confidently
  • For an adult, especially in the 40s, 50s, and 60s, near vision determines productivity, independence, and dignity.
  • Uncorrected refractive errors and presbyopia quietly erode educational outcomes and workforce efficiency—yet they are among the simplest and most cost-effective health problems to correct.
  • Eye on the Future was designed as a life-course vision program: addressing children early, and restoring functional vision in adults during their most productive years.

Everyone Deserves To See

The incidence of refractive errors in Indian children ranges from 5-20%, with an estimated 3.4 million children struggling with uncorrected refractive errors. For children living in slums and other low-income communities, this leads to poor academic performance, lower quality of life, and possible blindness, all of which are eminently preventable. Annually, India loses 1.2 million school years to uncorrected vision problems. If provided with glasses, students could achieve double the academic progress, and earn +56% more over their lifetime. This could unlock an annual economic potential of ₹156 billion in India.

Presbyopia is an age-related decline in near vision that affects nearly all individuals above 40 years of age. In low-income communities, access to simple near-vision correction is often limited, leading to reduced productivity, dependence, and diminished quality of life. The objective of these camps was to provide early identification and immediate correction of presbyopia among elderly residents who otherwise have little or no access to eye care services.\
